Dareus will miss two games

Posted by BamaFootball4Life | Sep 3, 2010 | -

Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus will miss two games and must pay almost $1,800 in restitution for improper contact with an agent, the NCAA announced Thursday. Dareus made two trips to Miami, according to an NCAA release, and received improper benefits that included airfare, lodging, meals and transportation. The junior will miss Saturday’s season opener against San Jose State and next week’s game against Penn State. He also has to pay $1,787.17 to the charity of his choice. “We respect the decision, but we are at the same time disappointed in the suspension,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement. “Hopefully, Marcell and all involved have learned a valuable lesson from this.” The NCAA, according to Alabama compliance director Mike Ward, said Dareus “was one of the most truthful student-athletes we have ever interviewed.” The NCAA said Dareus could have been suspended for as many as four games. Mosley could be an impact player

Not many freshmen practiced their way onto the University of Alabama’s preseason depth chart, and even fewer will ultimately make a significant impact on the Crimson Tide’s 2010 season. Count C.J. Mosley among those with a chance. Mosley is one of two immediate backups to Jerrell Harris at the weakside linebacker position, along with sophomore Nico Johnson. UA coach Nick Saban said Mosley was able to clear some of the common hurdles that prevent freshmen from competing at the highest level. “C.J. is a very bright guy. He’s very football instinctive and he’s a very, very good athlete,” Saban said. “As young guys go, he’s been one of the guys who has been showing the most maturity in being able to learn, grow, develop and learn from mistakes.” [More]

Williams finally getting his chance

Chavis Williams was a sophomore when he sacked Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper on national television. Since then, he’s seen much more of the bench than opposing quarterbacks. He quietly mastered the Alabama defense while sitting behind starting linebacker Cory Reamer. Now, it’s time for his return to the spotlight as a senior. Williams topped the depth chart released Monday at the outside linebacker position known as the “Sam.” After sitting and waiting his turn, he isn’t ready to celebrate just yet. “I try to ignore all the (attention) because we’ve got a game to play. Starting doesn’t mean anything. You’ve got to go out and play, and show that you can do it, and maintain it.” Getting back to the game field meant adding about 30 pounds to his long frame. He gives credit to Alabama’s newly hired nutritionist Amy Bragg for teaching him the tricks to adding the bulk that he needed to compete at the highest level. Now weighing close to 235, Williams is just about as heavy as Reamer was last year. [More]

Big game – one week later

Not a big name: Alabama opened its last two seasons against top-10 opponents in nationally televised games that were easily hyped. This year? It’s San Jose State, a nondescript team from California that was 2-10 last season and is picked to finish last in its conference. “That doesn’t change anything,” safety Mark Barron said. “I mean, it’s still a game. … We have to prepare for every team the same.” Coach Nick Saban said the Tide still plays an early-season heavyweight, though Penn State “just happens to fall a week later in the season.” Still, Alabama has focused on San Jose State. “Our players definitely respect the team that we’re playing, but I think they also know what challenges lie ahead,” Saban said. “This is the beginning of a journey and I think it is about what we do and it’s always been about that.
