Steve Spurrier Throws Jabs At Nick Saban

By Jon Solomon, The Birmingham News:
Spurrier’s comments to’s Chris Low this week were vintage Spurrier. They’re the kind of zingers SEC fans laugh at — unless he’s insulting your team. Spurrier on Nick Saban and what he’s done at Alabama: “He’s got a nice little gig going, a bit like (John) Calipari. He tells guys, ‘Hey, three years from now, you’re going to be a first-round pick and go.’ If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win, because they’ve always won there at Alabama.”

Only Spurrier would dare to define the terms of a coaching-legacy debate involving himself. It sounds like Spurrier has been scoreboard-watching on national titles (Saban 3, Spurrier 1) and SEC titles (Spurrier 6, Saban 3). They’re neck-and-neck (Spurrier 7, Saban 6) if you add them up in the mythical and never-ending quest to be named Best SEC Coach Since Bear Bryant. It’s Saban, not Spurrier, who is the first coach in college football history to win a national championship with two different Football Bowl Subdivision schools. It’s Saban, not Spurrier, who joins Bryant as the only coaches with SEC championships at two different schools. [More]
